main cause of this is the May bloom that has been forming in the calm sea. Needs
a blow really to break this algae up.
Besides Mackerel there have been a few
small Pollock a couple of Plaice a few Dogfish and a few Garfish
caught..
Still plenty of squid being caught. There were 21 caught yesterday
(Sat) in the squid competition arranged by FishyRob to 48 anglers.
If
purchasing a rod and reel deal this week from the tackle box you will get 5 sets
of feathers thrown in if you ask for "a world cup Argentinean hand of Cod
deal".
1st May2010
The fishing has remained steady most of the week despite the
wind. The sea is semi clear but should become clear again by Monday with the
northerly winds forecast.
There have been Mackerel caught on feathers and
floats from the west arm, some days lots and others just a few.
A few more
Garfish caught this week on floats.
Pollock on the end of the east arm to
floated fish baits.
A few very small Bass being caught to floats and ledger.
There were a couple of sizeable ones landed on the east this week but don't know
weight or bait used.
Still lots of squid being caught to squid jigs. FishyRob
is running the British Squid Fishing Championship from the east arm on sat 8th
May . Anyone can enter, contact him at.Robin@fishyrob.co.uk
Dave Grinham has a different deal this week. If you
buy any rod and reel combo over £35 he will add 5 sets of feathers to the deal.
The password for this must be addressed to Eddy and it is "Hey Beaky if you and
that crow you feed stood back to back you would look like a
pickaxe".
24th April 2010
The fishing started off the week pretty dead but has got a lot
better towards the end of the week. The sea is very clear.
There were a
couple of Mackerel caught on Friday to feather from the west arm. Today (Sat)
there have been load caught from the west. They started catching them at first
light and are still catching them as I write this (Noon).
There have been a
few Garfish to floats.
A couple of Wrasse have been caught to worm bait down
the side of the wall.
A couple of small Pollock to floats from the end of the
east arm and a few very small Bass
Dave Grinham is running an election
special "Called feather your own nest" and is selling a 12 foot beach caster
with a Mitchell reel for £39.99. If you mention that you saw it on this site he
will add 3 weights and 3 sets of feathers to the deal.
17th April 2010
Still not many fish . The first Garfish was caught last Sunday
and a few more have been caught since, to floated Mack strips. The first Squid
also came up last Sunday and there have been quite a few caught since then. I
went down today (Sat) and saw 3 caught by some Chinese anglers and another 3
singles on the west arm between bays 1 to 10. Fishyrob reckons the best
bays/times for them on both arms are , the lower bays ie 1 to 5 on high water
and the farthest bays on low water.
The sea is clear.
10th April 2010
It is the same as the last
few weeks with hardly any fish being caught. There have been some very small
Whiting and some very small unkeepable Plaice caught this week. The sea is still
dirty
3rd April 2010
The arms have been shut half
the week due to strong winds. Not many anglers, so nothing to report. The sea is
filthy.
27th March 2010
The sea is slightly
coloured.
The fishing is still pretty dead though there have been a few
decent Plaice caught this week. Besides these there have been the odd Dogfish
and Pin Whiting at night.
I had a couple of e-mails about catches, that I
have put on the recent e-mails page.
20th March 2010
The sea is slightly coloured.
The only fish seen caught this
week have been a Bullhead and 3 Rockling.
13th March 2010
The sea is clear not just of dirt but also fish. Another blank
week.
6th March 2010
The fishing is still grim with no fish in the daytime and just
a few Pin Whiting and Flounders caught at night. The sea is clear.
Mackerel
are being caught by the boats about 4 mile off Shoreham.
27th February 2010
The arms have only been open a couple of days but
there hasn't been any one fishing. The sea is dirty and a big storm is forecast
for Sunday. Should be calm by Monday and there could be some fish with the tides
being up to 7.2 metres next week.
20th February 2010
The same old story as per last few weeks. Not many
anglers and not many fish caught, just pin Whiting at night and Rockling all
over the place. The sea colour is in between , not too dirty but not clear.
13th February 2010
There have been precious few anglers and precious
few fish. The fishing is pretty dire with just a few pin Whiting being
caught.
6th February 2010
The arms have been open all week but with few
anglers again. The sea has been clear but is now dirty again.
It is that time
of year now when the fishing is pretty bad. The only fish caught this week have
been Pin Whiting at night and a few Flounders. There were a few bigger Whiting
on the massive tides.
30th January 2010
In spite of a few stiff winds the arms have remained
open but with few people fishing. The sea is clearish and clearing all the time
with the northerly winds.
There have only been a few species of fish caught
this week. Mostly Pin Whiting at night, looks like they are finishing now. There
have been a few Flounders to fish and worm baits and lots of the dreaded
Rockling to any bait.
Really high tides for this coming week lets hope the
wind stays away.
23rd January 2010
The arms have only been closed for one day this week
for a change, but few people have fished. The sea is dirty.
The Whiting are
still around and are being caught in the day as well as at night.
The only
other fish reported being caught this week are a few flounders
16th January 2010
The arms have been shut virtually all week due to
ice then strong winds.
The few hours the arms were open there were a few
Whiting caught.
9th January 2010
The arms have been closed nearly all week due to ice
covering the steps. There has only been one angler all week.
2nd January 2010
The east arm has been open most of the week but with
few anglers. The northerly winds have cleared the sea from dirty to slightly
coloured.
Now the sea is clearer the whiting are only showing at night. The
only other fish reported this week have been the odd Plaice and a couple of
small Codling.
I went down yesterday Ffriday) ,and there were only 3 other
fishermen and between us we experienced nil bites, in spite of a really high
tide. It was too clear for Whiting but a bit too dirty for Herring. The moon was
in the wrong position for Bass and all the Cod were still sobering up from the
new year. Even the Rockling stayed away yesterday and I don't want to be fishist
but we don't want them around these parts anyway.
26th December 2009
The arms haven't been open much this past week. As
the ice cleared the winds became stronger, so the east was open for a couple of
days only. On these days only a few people fished. The sea has gone from clear
to dirty again.
There have been lots of Whiting caught of all sizes to all
baits. There were also quite a few Plaice to worm and some Flounders to worm or
fish baits.
19th December 2009
The winds have been northerly/easterly all week
which has left the sea really clear. The west has been closed all week but the
east has been open until the end of the week. The east had to be closed for
safety reasons ie the ice that is covering it.
In the clear water a couple of
Mackerel were caught along with lots of Herrings to the small Herring
feathers.
Lots of Pollock this week over the rocks mainly to red
gills.
Lots of Bass still around though no big ones reported. In spite of the
cold snap the sea is still a lot warmer than normal for this time of
year.
The Whiting are only being caught at night now that the sea is clear.
There have been a few small Codling also caught at night.
12th December 2009
The east arm has been open for most of the week
whilst thev west has remained closed. The sea is filthy but is clearing with the
north wind and if it stays like this as forecast, the sea should be clear by
Tuesday.
There have been lots of Whiting caught day and night while the sea
has been dirty. Some large ones amongst them. Taking all baits.
Lots of small
Bass and a 6 pounder caught by Dean from bay 1 on a piece of mackerel.
There
have been a few Eels and Plaice caught with one going 2 pounds.
At night a
couple of Codling 5lbs and 6lbs caught.
The trawlers are netting lots of
Herring really close in so they could be around when the water
clears.
5th December 2009
There have been strong winds all week and the arms
have been shut nearly all week. The sea is filthy.
The arms managed to open
for about half a day and there were lots of Whiting, schoolie Bass, and Eels
caught along with a 2lb Sole. Winds look to remain strong until
Thursday.
28th November 2009
Nothing to report this week as both arms have been
shut all week due to the strong winds. The sea is filthy.
The winds are
forecast to switch to a north westerly for Mon and Tues, so hopefully the east
arm will reopen then. The rest of the weeks forecast doesn't look to good with
southerly or westerly winds forecast
21st November 2009
The south coast as like most of the country has been
battered by strong southern and westerly winds all week. The arms have been
closed every day bar Tuesday when the east arm was opened. The sea has been
filthy all week and the day the east arm was open there were Whiting galore of
all sizes taking all baits.
The east arm has suffered some minor damage to
barriers but shouldn't take long to repair and won't interfere with the fishing.
The areas of repair will be sectioned off. The forecast for the week ahead looks
grim with winds of 50mph forecast for every day.
14th November 2009
The arms haven't been open much this week due to the
strong westerly and southern winds. The arms have been open just the odd few
days. The wind is really strong at the moment and lets hope there is no damage
to the arms. The sea is filthy.
The Mackerel came back for Tuesday and Weds
morning but went as the water started to dirty. Tony the taxi driver had a good
haul down there on Tuesday.
The only other fish to report are a few small
Bass and lots of Whiting at night of all sizes taking any bait. There were loads
when I went down Monday evening.
7th November 2009
The arms have been open for roughly half the week
because of the strong winds. The sea has varied from coloured to dirty, it is
dirty at the moment.
When the water was really dirty there have been small
Bass to most baits, Whiting to most baits, Dogfish to most baits , Flounders to
worm or fish baits, Sole to worm baits, a few Codling to worm, squid or fish
bait. These have been caught in the day time and night time from both
arms.
Yesterday when the sea was in between colours a guy caught a Turbot,
some Whiting, a few Flounders and a large Wrasse. Everyone else seemed to have
blanked even the angler standing right next to him.
Last Saturday when the
sea was clear anglers fishing for Herrings were catching Herrings and Anchovies.
I have since seen reports in the press that large shoals are being trawled and
they have arrived because of the warm weather/sea that we have been
experiencing.
31st October 2009
There has been a constant stiff breeze this week and
the arms were closed for one day. The sea is still fairly clear but really
strong winds are forecast for most of the coming week.
This week has seen a
right mixture of winter and summer fish.
Lots of Mackerel in the early
mornings and sometimes staying around until after the tide. Along with Garfish
to floats.
Lots of Schoolies around again this week but no big Bass
reported.
A few Shad caught this week and a few Herring to the small Herring
feathers.
A few small Codling have been caught at nigh along with Whiting.
The Whiting are hit and miss at the moment appearing in good numbers one night
and none the next night. It was good last night (Friday) with some decent sized
ones caught
24th October 2009
The southerly winds were fairly strong this week
causing the arms to be closed for one day. The sea didn't get too dirty it just
became coloured. The wind is strong today and the sea is getting
dirtier.
Lots of Mackerel around, there were thousands yesterday and they are
still being caught today (Sat) in spite of the sea getting dirty.
Lots of
Schoolie Bass around taking all baits, I caught a few yesterday on feathers and
baits on the retrieve. Biggest Bass reported this week 5lbs.
There were a few
Codling caught at the beginning of the week at night along with some Whiting.
Lots
of Dogfish turned up last night taking baits intended for Cod or Bass.
Sole
still ast night along with a few Plaice at any time.
17th October 2009
This week weather has again been fine and the sea is
still clear.
Plenty of Mackerel around at dawn and dusk and sometimes they
have been coming in with the high tide.
Lots of Garfish to floated fish
baits.
Still the odd Bream being caught but not that many.
Mainly small
Bass have been caught this week . Live prawns or Pouting have been the best
baits this week in the clear conditions.
More Whiting are turning up at
night.
Sole at night to worm.
There have been quite a few Codling caught
this week a few every night. There were 4 last night between 3lbs to 7lbs that
we know about. They have been taking all baits ie worm, mackerel,
squid.
There is a blow forecast from south/south east Mon/Tues. If the sea
stirs up the Whiting and Codling could show up in the day
10th October 2009
The week started of windy and became extremely wet.
Arm closed for one day The sea became slightly coloured but has now cleared
again.
Lots of Mackerel most days at all times of the day. Also the Garfish
have returned in good numbers being caught to floats and feathers.
Bream seem
on the decline now with only the odd few being caught each day.
Lots of
Mullet around taking almost any bait. I caught one on Thursday in my baited net,
baited with guts and heads.
Lots of Bass being caught to live prawns but
mainly Mac heads, chunks or sides. Dave Grinham landed a 61/2 pounder but was
again out fished by Callum who landed a 10lb one on a Mac head. There have been
some others at 9lbs one of which was caught by "The Pieman". That's Dave's name
for him.
At night there have been good Sole to worm and one night a few
Codling were caught.
3rd October 2009
It has been calm all week and the sea has been ultra
clear. It is starting to blow today and this could put some colour in the
sea.
There have been plenty of Mackerel at all different times of the day but
early morning has been best.
A few more Garfish have been caught this week to
floats , a few more than previous weeks.
Bream have been caught but in
lesser numbers, good numbers one day and none the next.
Lots of Bass this
week to either live pouting but mainly floated live prawn. Two 9 to 91/2
pounders caught from the east on live prawns (don't know anglers names) and the
Ali brothers had a 8lb one from the west on live pouting.
At night Sole to
worm, lots of Horse Mackerel and last night a 4lb Codling was
caught.
26th September 2009
It has been fair all week with only light winds. The
sea is crystal clear.
There have again been good numbers of Mackerel on
certain days or times. There were lots caught in the day on Weds, Thurs but
hardly any on Friday . It has been better at dawn and dusk, there were lots of
them at first light today (Sat).
The float fishers have had a few Garfish,
Bream and Mullet all on floated fish baits. A Mullet of 5lbs caught this week
on a Mackerel chunk.
Bream still around but less than previous weeks. There
was a 3lb Black Bream caught this week by Kharim on the east end by the
rocks.
There is a lot of Whitebait around along with the Mackerel so the Bass
have mainly been taking live floated prawns this week. There was a 31/2 to 4lbs
Bass caught last night on a Mackerel side.
There have been a couple of Plaice
caught to worm baits and Sole at night to worm.
19th September 2009
It has been a fine week with strong north or
easterly winds. These have now ceased and the sea is crystal clear.
The
mackerel have been around both arms , good one day and not so good another. They
were around the east arm today(Sat) until about 3 hours after high tide. They
weren't constant coming in about half hour intervals. They have been
unpredictable but the best times for good number seems like dawn or dusk.
A
few Garfish caught to floated fish baits along with a few Pollock.
There have
been plenty of Bream taking small hooked fish or worm baits, not many today
though. Some larger Bream have been caught at night.
Lots of Wrasse down the
walls to worm baits.
Quite a few Bass, small to medium mainly on live prawn
but a few on Mac heads or sides.
At night a few small Codling have been
caught along with various sized Whiting. These are unpredictable like the
Mackerel, there one night and not the next. Sole still being caught to worm
baits
12th September 2009
The weather has stayed fine all week but there has
been a strong north easterly wind all week. The sea is clear.
The Mackerel
returned Weds morning and were shoaling around the east arm until high tide when
they disappeared. The best time to catch them since then has been early in the
morning from both arms.
A few Garfish have also been caught to floated fish
baits.
A few decent Pollock have been caught to lures/feathers/ floated fish
baits up near the rocks on the east arm. These and the Garfish seem to be scarce
this year.
Still plenty of Bream to small hooked fish or worm baits.
The
first part of the week Bass were taking Mac heads/sides etc but now the sea is
clear live prawns have been deadliest taking Bass up to 4 to 5 lbs.
There
have also been a few Gurnard caught, I had one on worm and another on Mac
bait.
Channel Whiting appeared two nights ago and were a mixture of sizes
from small to medium.
At night Sole to worm baits and Whiting.
4th September 2009
There is nothing to report this week as the arms
have been closed virtually all week due to the very strong south and westerly
winds. The sea is filthy.
The forecast is for the wind to calm down and Dave
reckons the fishing will be good by Sunday.
29th August 2009
It has been windy all week and the arms were closed
for 2 days. The sea is really dirty and weedy on the west side but not so bad on
the east.
The Mackerel returned to the east arm on Thursday night in good
numbers but then the arm was closed due to the winds on Friday.
The blow
didn't bring in any Codling as Dave predicted but it did bring in lots of
schoolie Bass as well as a good number of big ones. There were about 8 on
Thursday going 3, 4, and 5 lbs. 4 on Friday up to 9lbs. Today(Sat) some anglers
climbed the west gate as the arms were closed Fri night and had a 6lb and a 8lb
at bay 18. These were all caught on Mackerel heads, or Mackerel sides or squid,
mainly in low water.
Still plenty of Bream , better on the east where it has
been clearer.
At night Sole to worm baits, 3to 4lbs Smoothhounds to crabs
along with Bream and Horse Mackerel.
